Wood Ants are apparently in need of some TLC. They are declining in most parts of the country but here in Devon, not that hard to find. I know of at least four nests. Apparently they are dependent on sunshine at this time of the year and I have been seeing them in clusters just soaking in the sun. I decided to get a photo or two today which turned out to be one of my usual adventures. I got bitten in the most delicate place possible which mad me squirm. I am prone to anaphylactic reactions if stung by wasps. I was stung by fire ants in the USA last year and this was my last episode. I was half expecting to “go down” today, but fortunately I didn’t have a reaction…….. a big relief!

  1. Nice pics chas.
You dont have to worry about wood ants, at least in regards to anaphylactic reactions. Fire ants as you say sting like wasps but wood ants don’t have a sting, they spray acid out the rear of there abdomen where the sting would be. The bites I find arnt to bad…..until they find a soft spot!
