I am still enjoying my Dipper study and today I spent a while at the river just watching, waiting and observing the comings and goings. I am not totally satisfied that my bag hide is in fact giving me the kind of camouflage that is necessary, in fact I am pretty sure it is isn’t 100% convincing. Today for example, a Grey Heron flew in down stream and in spite of me being completely concealed in the bag , the Heron seemed to suss me out and left hastily when he became suspicious.
When I first arrived at the river there were 3 Dippers and a bit of posturing taking place. I am sure that what we have is a pair and a single male. The “pair” are together constantly and I knew exactly where they were this afternoon for my entire session. They were just out of camera range to my right and I would catch glimpse of them now and then but they never came close to me. I was very surprised when I walked back to my care to see the bird (above) because I hadn’t been aware of him all afternoon. He allowed me to get a bit closer than is usual and I crept up to him and then used a tree stump to rest the camera on. I tried to get closer still but off he went as soon as I got too close……….. it’s very frustrating.!
