I have tried hard over the last couple of weeks to get a nice shot of small common birds in flight. It is incredibly difficult, so many things need to be in place to achieve success. The most important factor is strong light. Once you have that then you can adjust the camera accordingly, but still it is very hit and miss. I suppose that if you take enough photographs then you will eventually get at least one shot that you are almost happy with. Of course, the shutter needs to be pressed at exactly the right time which in it’s self is hard to do.

Hi Charlie,
You’re getting pretty good at this bird photography lark! the picture of the little egret plumage is stunning.
Re. the single flash photography; you might want to try a mirror opposite ( you can get mirrored plastic film in a roll which you can stick on fence panels [B&Q maybe]), as the light has further to travel it fills in the shadows with less intensity than your main flash which gives good modelling.
best wishes philLikeLike
