I thought I would "Blog" about the American Robin – Turdus migratorus, that is currently on Exminster Marsh and then if you are thinking of coming to "twitch" it you may find this useful. Yesterday afternoon I went to try and see it and hopefully get a nice photo, I was just literally minutes late. I got splendid views of the bird, a cracking male.  It was in bushes very near to me but I didn't manage a good photograph.  By the end of the afternoon when the light started to fade, I came home, content that I had seen it but disappointed that I hadn't managed a decent photo. So, this morning as soon as I was up and about, I went back to try again.  Pretty much the same pattern now with disappointing distant views yet again.  Now it seems to have regained some energy it has started to act in a more natural way and is starting to roam! Be wary if you intend to travel a great distance that it may not be that easy to see especially if it continues to regain it's strength.  Also, and of extreme importance if you dont know the area well, parking is limited unless you are prepared for a long walk. The nearest car park is not the RSPB car park and is situated close to the canal, proceed down the road from the Swans Nest and eventually you will come to this car park.   There are less than 10 spaces there at the moment due to some workings and contractors vehicles.  Clampers  are having a field day and they are obnoxious……. they WILL clamp you vehicle with very little excuse. My advice would be this, park in the RSPB car park, which is situated at the begining of the road next to the railway line. Then walk back to the road and down to the canal, about a mile.  At the canal turn right and walk about 3/4 of a mile to the end of the canal and the Turf Locks Hotel.  Here you will find a large group of birders who will be able to put you on to the bird or enjoy telling you that "it was here just before you arrived" etc. Again, if you are travelling a distance you can get a nice meal in the Swans Nest Hotel situated on the edge of the marsh. Dont leave your car on the road, you will be clamped. For better directions if you need them you can email me at  charlesfleming1@mac.com

As I didn't manage a picture and if you haven't been there yet, visit Karen Wooley's blog here

  1. I was fishing for pike on the canal down there today and didn’t see it, sadly. There were bird watchers in abundance though, and the wheel clamper was going for it in the little car park at the canal too, so do watch out!
He (the Robin and the clamper) is still there though apparently.
    Good luck!
