Solitary Sandpiper
After returning from yet another trip out of the county earlier this evening I checked out a few of the birding web sites to discover what has been discovered over the weekend and the "mega" discovery oof the day, at Black Hole Marsh Seaton, is a Solitary Sandpiper   – Tringa solitaria.  This is a North American wader that rarely shows it's self in the UK, a massive find for Devon and big for the rest of the UK.   Tomorrow is going to be quite a hectic one at Black Hole Marsh, and not a day for the faint hearted.  I am guessing that twitchers will be travelling, as we speak, to catch a glimpse of it and "tick" it off their lists. If you are not familiar with this species, I have posted a nice picture that I took in April of a Solitary Sandpiper in Southern Florida.  They are very similar to Wood Sanpipers and also Lesser Yellowlegs…….. (all the same family).  I hope this bird does not turn out to be a Wood Sandpiper, this will be quite a disappointment for those who travel the lenght of the country to "tick" it.  I look forward to some pictures to follow and also the latest news…….. and, will I be going for a look?  No, I doubt it.  I have seen the species before so I will leave it to those whose need"s are greater than mine!
