We returned o the beach at Pompano yesterday, I needed to try for more, and hopefully improved pictures of the Black Skimmers.  Now the Easter break is over the beach was much quieter and consequently the Skimmers were sitting just above the surf in the company of Royal and Sandwich Tern. They were a real spectacle with their stunning black and white plumage contrasting with the enormous black tipped reddish beak. From time to time when slightly disturbed or just whenever they felt like it they would fly around us at tremendous speed in the breezy conditions. Using a commando crawl on my elbows I got quite close to them and got some great shots and lovely views.

Good one

Such amazing photos of these fantastic birds! When I first heard about the Skimmer’s beak adaptation, I truly thought it was a wind-up. It’s always a pleasure to see your pictures and doubly exciting now you’re in Florida. Thank you.
