The Little Blue Heron is, as the name correctly states a blue heron, small in stature……………… but it's not as easy as that because Juvenile birds of this species are an off-white colour and very easily confused with other species. But they no longer confuse me because I see them quite often and have got used to these white birds being called "blue". The legs are the give away because no other species of heron here in Florida has these completely greenish yellow legs. The photo above is more about the prey than the bird. I have to say that the fish is very interesting and I have absolutely no idea of the species. If I were in the UK then I would have had a name for it in the blink of an eye, but unfortunately not here. It was caught in completely salty sea water and my guess is it is an aggressive little predator, but in this case the hunter became the hunted!
Brown Pelicans need very little introduction to anyone and they are very, very common here. I always like to photograph them and today, in the late afternoon and early evening, the wet and cloudy day cleared to leave good light and nice photographic conditions. I tried to get some "artsy" shots of them and also some natural fishing behaviour. A couple of these attempts turned out really well …………. today's WOW moment.
