Dark Bush Cricket
We were out at Branscombe Beach this morning and enjoying the sun and the amazing view of Lyme Bay…. Seaton to our left and Torbay to our right. I decided to use my bat detector to listen for Crickets singing in the rough ground at the top of the beach, it was like a zoo, full of various songs and clicks from the assembled crickets singing away mostly unheard by the human ear but brought out by the High frequency detector which converts inaudible sounds in to a noise perceptible by the human ear. Homing in on one particular insect I eventually managed to find this insect which in fact is a female dark Bush Cricket and not the one singing of course……. only the males do the singing.DB Cricket back This species is apparently common even though it is the first one I have seen I think. It was quite big about an inch long. The second photo shows the sickle-like ovi-positor which must be used to literally “cut” in to the earth to deposit the eggs. It is an impressive insect with amazing eyes as seen in this crop to get as close to them as possible.
