As you may have read, I had some great success with the Buzzards the other day managing to get some close up photos as a buzzard flew down to the bait right in front of the hide.  It was wonderful to be honest and well worth the waiting over the last month.  I have had visits from 2 different birds – possibly 3.  The first one I saw regularly was a dark bird with a dark eye, a relatively small bird with a small head.  Another, which I had seen less but in the end gave me the best views, is lighter and a juvenile for certain.  It has a typical juvenile type breast, white and boldly streaked. The eye is noticeably lighter, in an adult it would be dark and the edge of the tail would be differently marked.  When I eventually manage to photograph the darker bird more effectively I will be able to compare properly.  In the meantime, here are even more photographs from the session the other day.

You can clearly see the lightly streaked breast and the lighter eye on this magnificent individual.  What a beautiful specimen. It has a full crop which bulges with meat from the various bait items that I had placed to attract it. I took the photograph on the 20th and when I went back early on the 21st it was there again looking for more food which is a great result for me. The only downside is that if the bird is disturbed as I approach the area, it can be quite an extended time before it returns again.

In this photograph you can see that the tail looks unworn, obviously fresh but it is also edged with lighter feathers, again an indication of a juvenile bird.

So what's next with this project? I will continue to try to observe different individuals and then capture good photographs for comparison.  I am trying to get more photographs of them in flight as they fly down to the bait.  I picture in my mind the amazing spectacle the other day as the bird left the telegraph pole and glided down to the carcass.  It really was wonderful to see.
