In the UK, as birders we are excited when there are reports of a Shrike, be it Great Grey, Woodchat or Red backed. So it goes without saying that whenever I come to Florida I am always attracted to the common shrike species here, the Loggerhead Shrike. They are a common and noticeable bird and I would say that they are easy to find in any area where there is a bit of scrubby land that holds a source of suitable prey. This includes grasshoppers, dragonflies, bees, flies and lizards. I have been fortunate enough to see them feeding on all of the insects mentioned but as yet, not reptiles. Apparently, in addition they will also feed on small birds and mice but with an abundance of invertebrates I would guess that birds do not figure that often.
