Sometimes you get a lucky break and a photo opportunity presents itself. That's what happened with this absolutely stunning little American Kestrel this morning. Now obsessed with Ospreys I returned to the beach park to try and get some more great shots but unfortunately today they seemed to be fishing further in to Port Everglades and just only once made a half hearted pass down to a fish close by which was aborted at the last split second. On my walk back to the car suddenly this kestrel flew over my shoulder to perch on the Sea Grape just in front of me and because we were in a relatively busy area I suppose it was quite used to a bit of human activity. As soon as it perched I locked on to it and took pictures and then moved forward 10 feet nearer for a few more shots. Eventually I had done this a few times and had the bird filling my frame. It was in hunting mode and looking for prey, possibly lizards and/or grasshoppers but the weather was very cool by Florida standards and there was very little movement from the cold blooded reptiles……food was obviously hard to find. Then a walker appeared from the other direction and off it flew but not before I had secured the best images of this species, a wonderful cameo encounter that took five minutes but absolutely made my day.
