I enjoyed getting back out again today after the Christmas and New Year. The weather has just been too wet of course so when there was blue sky this morning it was an ideal opportunity to go out to Brixham. I wanted to see if I could photograph the Divers that have been seen in and around the harbour this last few weeks. Great Northern Divers, or Loon as this species is called in the USA are always great to see. For me they have a mystique about them. I did see at least 6 divers which was great but the first bird I saw was a Shag tussling with a massive pouting. It never managed to get it down even though it spent at least 5 minutes trying and eventually it was robbed by a Great Black backed Gull. Who flew in, grabbed the fish and departed with it's prize.
To be fair, I don't think there was any chance of the bird getting the fish down it's gullet. But it certainly tried really hard.

The Great Northern Divers were feeding on crabs which they would dive for obviously. They would spend in excess of 30 seconds under the water before returning back to the surface with a crab which they would then prepare for swallowing by removing the legs and claws.
