This is a Dunlin. I photographed it this morning in a "stake out" on the River Exe at Turf. When I first arrived the tide was almost at its height and there were a few birds on the posts as I hoped. Unfortunately they departed as I approached and I quickly got myself sat down and under cover. Another birder – Dave Boult – arrived later and took this photo so you can see that it looks reasonably effective. As it happened it worked well and after just a few minutes the Dunlin – pictured above – flew in, perched close by and was totally fooled by the camo. Then after a while a Grey Plover arrived, and landed on one of the posts much closer to me just to my right. I swung the camera very, very slowly in the bird's direction and took some photographs but because of the very overcast conditions with bright reflections from the water the pictures are not as good as I would have hoped for.

This picture is exactly as it came out of the camera with no cropping or manipulation which will give you a good idea of how close the bird was and how well the camp worked but also how difficult it is to get good photographs in some winter conditions.
After a while two Redshank and another Grey Plover came in which was both exciting and rewarding but with no sun and very bright reflections from the water the opportunities for a great photo were very limited.
