I went with Jenny to have lunch with a friend yesterday. He told me that he had been watching a Kingfisher earlier and very nearby. Knowing that Kingfishers are  very  territorial I thought that we would have a good chance of seeing it again so we went for a look.   Sure enough there it was in exactly the same spot that he had seen it before.  I had never seen a Kingfisher that was so confiding and even though it must have been aware of us it remained on it's perch.  Then other walkers approached even closer – but unaware of the bird – and it still remained.  I went back today in very dull conditions and sure enough there it was again.  What's more, I chatted to a lady who was throwing a ball in to the water for her dog and she told me that rather than disturb the bird it was actually attracted to the animal in the water.  Of course, I doubted this but she carried on throwing the ball and the dog was splashing around, suddenly the Kingfisher flew to a spot above the dog and dived to catch a fish just 10 feet from me and even closer to the dog of course. The Kingfisher had learnt that the mutt  disturbed the fish causing  panick and this was and ideal time to come in to that spot for easy pickings.  This was repeated on three occasions to prove it!  I have to say that this is the most incredible Kingfisher behaviour that I have ever witnessed.  The bird looks like a first year juvenile so it has obviously acquired this feeding behaviour over the last few months…. like I said, incredible.
