This is an Orange-breasted Sunbird, an endemic species found only in a small area around the Western Cape of South Africa.  I have been unable to discover the population but in the Western Cape they are common. I thought  it would be interesting to read how I  managed to get this photograph.  It was taken in Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town.  We had been walking throug the gardens enjoying the glorious views and plantings.  From time to time we saw birds and as we reached one of the higher areas of the gardens we disturbed a few birds that were feeding on blossoms but immediately they disappeared in to the thick foliage. As it happened there was a lawned area and a comfy garden seat about 20 metres from the plants. We sat watching and waiting for them to hopefuly return. It took at least 30 minutes but when they did I knew for certain that they were interested in feeding on these particular blossoms.

Nearby and just in front of  the flowers was a tree, I thought that if I made my way quietly and sat  down and remained still I could use the tree to break up my outline and with the camera on a tripod I could get a good shot. So having snapped off the more distant shot here, I then shuffled near and waited patiently.  Before the Orange Breast came back though, another bird arrived, what was it? And I still don't know!

I managed to get a bit closer but then it's head was mostly hidden and I disturbed it unfortunately but I did manage a shot which could help me to possitively ID it.

Then suddenly, there was the male Orange brested and I took some absolutely great shots which made my wait and patience well worth it.  It remained in front of me for a while but eventually it was disturbed by a couple of young adults playing with a frizbee! Just my luck.
