I had an interesting day today, and it was mostly successful. The afternoon was spent trying to photograph House Martins in flight. I went to the Brook armed with a net like a little boy and did some dipping in the hope of finding a dragonfly larvae or two but all the while knowing that I would at least be able to find a Stickleback or Minnow and thats just the way it turned out. While I was there I watched the Martins feeding on the surface of the brook. I quickly came home for my camera and then spent an hour or so trying to photograph them, it was almost impossible, they are so fast but I am planning to have another go tomorrow.
Later on I went to the wood to fill the feeders and check on things. I am really pleased to say that at last birds are using the second feeder which is Squirrel proof and in the meadow on the edge of the wood. I am anxious that this feeder starts to get regular visitors, I placed it there because the light is good and I am trying to encourage the Nuthatches to use it which I am sure they will eventually. When they do, I will be able to get photos of them in flight. Hope that doesn’t take too much longer, the feeder has already been there longer than a week and it has taken that long for them to accept it. Coal Tits and Great Tits were using it so I don’t feel I will need to wait much longer.
