I have to confess that I was excited when I saw this bird. There is a feeder at the Green Cay Wildlife area in Palm Beach County and I had been told in previous years that they come to feed close to the entrance. When we got to the magnificent wetlands and approached the feeders, there was no sign of them at all but a "birder" had his binoculars on one, deep in the bushes. After a while one flew up to the feeder, what an absolutely exquisite bird and I had a tingle of excitement like a boy on Christmas morning. With a bit of patience it became almost busy with at least 4 pairs coming and going. A Red Cardinal was also present and they were happy to feed together.

The females are a greenish yellow, still an attractive little bird but totally overshadowed by the stunning male. Apparently they are under threat because residents of Florida with "latin American" origins who trap the birds for the bird trade!
