Turkey Vultures are not in the least bit hard to see in South Florida, they are in fact one of the most noticeable birds. Never the less I have rarely been as close to them as I was today. Being Sunday and a really nice day to boot, the beaches and beach car parks were very busy. As we drove down one of the main roads close to home, I noticed…… well it was impossible to miss…… a Turkey Vulture feeding on a dead racoon. It wasn't going to be distracted by me and I got really close, too close really because the smell of the rotten carcass was almost too much too much to bear. It may be an ugly bird around the face but the plumage is impressive. They are doing a great job keeping everything healthy and clean by eating road kill and other rubish.
