Chats with the residents of the houses near to Dunsford Woods had given me information that Siskins, both males and females were still visiting bird feeders in their gardens. This was too much to resist and I hatched a plan to get some photographs to prove it. I set up a chair hide this morning close to one of the feeders which hung in a tree. After only a minute or so, there was a female Siskin. How nice it was to see her because I haven't seen one properly this year, nor last winter for that matter. I struggled at first, to get any kind of shot. I was positioned beneath and the inevitable shot in to the skyline always makes it hard. As well as that, she was usually behind, and therefore obscured by foliage. A bit of re-jigging was all that was required and and my plan was to concentrate on one particular perch where I guessed that the birds would land prior to moving on to the food. It worked, and this time a male came in and I took a couple of shots with the camera adjusted to take account of the backlight. It's pretty likely that the birds are breeding nearby which is very good. It's not that many years ago when that would have been quite a rare event. At this time of the year, in common with every other species, the males are in breeding plumage and very smart with their black cap and bib and canary yellow colouring. A lovely bird.

They are lovely and I too got my first photographs of some at the weekend. I was surprised at how small they are up close but so pretty. Nice capture 🙂
