Here is another "scanned" image of Penguins, this time Maggalenic or Jackass Penguins, taken sometime in the late 1980's. This bird differs in it's breeding habits from the colony breeding Rockhopper. They nest in burrows  deep in to sand dunes. You may  remember the Falkland conflict which must have had some kind of detrimental impact on the wildlife but this species benefited greatly. The Argentinians indiscriminately buried mines in the sand dunes which remained a danger long after the Islands were retaken by the victorious British forces.  These minefields were roped off and the resulting "no-go" areas provided some undisturbed breeding sites where the penguins were left well and truly undisturbed and could therefore flourish.  I well remember this site which was very close to the capital, Port Stanley. It was in a pretty little bay with bright blue sky, equally bright blue surf and pure white sand. I thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the Falkland Islands and it is on my "hit-list" to return sometime in the not too distant future.
