Sexual dimorphism is when a male and a female of the same species have a different appearance. In birds this is usually different colours and patterns of plumage. The Hairy Footed Flower Bee -Anthophora plumipes is also dimorphic, and to my eyes quite dramatically. I discovered this today when they were visiting flowers in my garden. I have seen the, almost black bee before in the garden, but hadn’t realised that males and females differed so remarkably. The male, instead of being black, has a white face and white “hair’ on the thorax. The first 2 photos shows a female, note the orange/yellow hairs on the hind legs. The third picture shows the totally different male. In this picture, you can see the hairy feet which gives this species it’s name.
