This is Coccinella septempunctata………… the Seven Spot Ladybird, the UK's most common ladybird, a beetles of course.  Ladybirds are a familiar and  welcome insect to have in the garden.  They are predators of Aphids so they should be encouraged for that fact alone.  I find the scientific name quite interesting. Coccinella for example is derived from the Italian for crimson and then the word became used to name "our" ladybird. Interestingly, the word has it's origins from the colour carmine, another word for crimson. Cochineal are a beetle species from Central America and  a source of the red food colouring and dye of the same name. Septempunctata is much more obvious, septem means seven and punctata is derived from the latin  "punctat" meaning "marked with pricks or punctures"  which is a reference to the spots of course. You may ask why is September the  9th month and not the 7th. The year way back in history started in March and of course that makes September month number 7, it's as simple as that!

The Garden Cross Spider Araneus diadematus, one of the most common spiders in the UK and seen from around now up until late Autumn.  At this time of the year they are quite small but you can still see the markings on the abdomen that gives them their name.
