After the weekend, it was back to photographing Dipper, at least that was the plan. So I packed my gear and was sat by the water by mid-morning. Unfortunately the carcass has gone, washed away from the spot where it lodged on top of a small waterfall. The water level must have risen over the weekend and lifted it off to then float down stream. I was really well camouflaged and concealed and Crows came down to look for it proving that I was well hidden. I had chosen a spot between the cleft of two large tree roots, in a perfect position by a rock which was in mid stream and had bird droppings on top, proving that dipper had been on there previously. I am sure that if they had been in this little stretch of the river I would have been perfectly placed. After ages, and without any dipper whatsoever my confidence began to wane. I changed position and walked up river, perhaps the Dippers where there today. Sure enough, I could see one about 200 yards further up. I quietly and secretively made my way towards it, this was where I had seen 2 on Friday, perhaps they are planning to nest in this little spot. I got reasonably close before it flew up stream further but I could still see it and I am sure it wasn't aware of me. I get myself settled and sorted and concealed myself as best as I could as before. I could see it and I watched and waited with lots of anticipation. It's really exciting when your intended quarry is not aware of you and starts to get nearer. The bird was working in the shallows 'dipping" and jumping in and then bobbing and dipping again as he made his way towards me. It makes it all worth while when eventually you have a bird close enough to photograph and it still isn't aware of your presence. It was popping in and out of the bankside vegitation and I took photo after photoi as it got within 20 feet of me. At this point, it flew up and landed with a flop in the fast flowing water and then disappeared under the surface………. and that waas the last I saw of it. Where it went to I will never know, it may have drifted quickly under the water with the current and then past me without me realising. But my day was done, I had got a few photos, learnt even more about the species, and found what is a potential nest site. So a good day all in all.
