Long-tailed Tits are a lovely little species and one that I always enjoy to see. Their behaviour reminds me of excited children. They call to each other repeatedly and make a kind of churring call as well. They are bundles of feathers with tails which are as long as their bodies. They are never alone and always seem to be in a small group, often in the company of other tits and small birds. My encounter with them yesterday was a nice one. There is a great spot out on Dartmoor that I enjoy going to. The River Dart winds it’s way through a valley which is surrounded on it’s banks by woodland. Here, at Badgers Holt, food is regularly put out for the birds by the car park next to a tasteful cafe. If you use the car as a hide you can get within just a few feet from some great little birds, including 4 different tit species, Chaffinches, Greenfinch, Nuthatch, Yellowhammer and who knows what else could come in. It presents a really good photo opportunity, as you can see by this photo and the Marsh Tits in the previous post. The light is good and the backgrounds just perfect, however it is still hard to get a perfect picture because these little birds come in quickly and freezing them with perfect focus is not as easy as it would first appear. But, with a bit of patience you can usually get a few good shots in every session.
