We had a nasty day today, dark, wet and overcast so I wasn't particularly disappointed not to have any transport until mid-afternoon. Fortunately that coincided with some bright weather arriving so, at 3.15,  I decided to go out to the local trading estate, just minutes from home, where a flock of 30  Waxwings had been reported for the last couple of days.  A quick drive around the garage forecourts proved a negative at first but eventually, as I came around the corner, there they were!  What a sight, 30 Waxwings (I counted them), completely smothering a small berry laden tree. They were right on the pavement and next to one of Exeter's busiest roads. It was probably one of the most impressive sights I have had as a bird enthusiast, almost crazy, so close to the road, a tree only 6 foot high, completely covered in birds! By now the sun had almost gone down and dusk was approaching so the few photos taken, pushed the camera equipment to the limits, but I did get some pretty photos.  This is my third encounter with Waxwings this winter, twice close to home and of course, the first of the year. If I was a list keeper I would have been pleased to add the bird to this years list as are all the locally based twitchers. I am sure that eventually, and it won't take long, all the berries on this little tree will disappear so it was good when I was looking for them, to find another tree still laden with berries that they will probably find. It was in a quieter road and might give some really good photo opportunities.
