This last week has been something of a festival of birds for me. What with Lapland Bunting last Monday and then finally getting the chance to photograph Waxwings yesterday, I completed the hat-trick this morning when the Snow Bunting, seen last Monday at Exminster, hung around for me to photograph this morning. I got up early, just before dawn and before the kids had started school, I was on my way to Exminster Marsh. I bumped in to a Cornish birder, John who had made the journey specially. Even though I always prefer to do my bird watching on my own it was good I suppose, that I could show him the exact spot that the bunting had been seen.. When we approached the area there was no sign of it at first and I resigned myself for disappointment…… then suddenly I caught sight of it not too far away. What an absolutely stunning bird and something I will remember for ever! After a while “John” left and I was left alone after all. I made the best of the quiet seclusion and lay on the frosty ground to get down to the bird’s level. It wasn’t long though before someone else turned up so fun over! It was great to see so many other birds there as well including Avocet and all the usual waders. When there is nothing else to see I will make a trip specifically to photograph these waders, with some thought I will be able to get very close to them and that will be good as Avocets are very photogenic.
