I have to confess to the onset of the winter miseries over the last few days. Things are not going well just lately, my  teeth are a real problem with root filling booked for next Wednesday. My plans to travel the world to photograph wildlife and explore wild places is not going to happen due to a wife who would rather stay at home and to be honest, lack of funds.   My band is causing me real heartache and worries, and worse of all, I hadn’t seen my Kingfisher on the hide perch for more than two weeks.  Then, this morning at 1028 after just a few minutes wait, there she was in glorious colour, just feet from me with a stickleback and then she caught another. It was dull…………… but who cares………. she is fabulous and I feel sorry for those people who are interested in Kingfishers and haven’t had a close encounter with one……. I have had more than 100!
She stayed, in her glory, six fet away, for long enough for me to take 48 pictures. She has been nicknamed “Beaky” because she has a longer than average one!  I noticed that she has completed her moult and is as pretty as she is going to be. As I have discovered, she doesn’t hang around and left quickly to go about her business somewhere else. Magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the afternoon, now with the knowledge that she is using “my” hide perches again, I had another session and glad to say she was there twice more! There is also real evidence that she is using my hide to rest on, so she has really accepted it as part of her territory again.

  1. Those are such beautiful pictures – I’ve never been upclose to a Kingfisher. Definitely that time of year for miserableness – I have earache today 😦
