I have been away in Yorkshire for the last few days, hence the absence of posts. Whilst away I always check the Rare Bird Alert pages to see if there are any interesting birds to go and see. This time there was reports of Little Gull at Pugneys Park on the outskirts of Wakefied. You wouldn't imagine this to be the most exotic place in the UK to birdwatch but you would be surprised. It is adjacent to the River Calder and birds use the river as a migratory highway, stopping off at Pugneys Park lakes to rest, or in some cases to breed as well. When I arrived two Little Gulls were on the lake and I borrowed some binos off a birder ( I had forgotten mine), to get a look. At that point I was pretty certain that I was going to get a half decent photo, that was until a dog literally ran in to the lake to chase the swans, and the rest of the gulls, mostly Black Headed. That pretty much put an end to that, as the birds scattered for cover. Dog walking and walkers are an absolute nuisance here and I marvelled at the selfishness of them. The owners have no concept whatsoever of the birds, birders or the damage and upset they are causing. Worse, much worse than the odd selfish dog walker here in Devon who are bad enough to be frank.
I had some interesting sightings of Kingfishers. There was a territorial dispute going on and three were chasing each other back and forth. Great Crested Grebe were also very evident but surprisingly hard to get close to. I like them a lot and if I could get close to them they would make really good subjects to photograph, As it is I took a few of the closest bird in the bright sunshine. They are a smashing bird!
