I wandered around Cockwood Harbour late this afternoon. It is an interesting place that can give good opportunities, mainly for waders and Egrets. In the harbour you can often see Black Tailed Godwits, Greenshank, Redsahank and other other waders. On the foreshore there are always Oystercatchers and lots of Gulls as well as the waders already mentioned. They can be difficult to get close to though but in the Autumn and early winter it is an area that I will definitely be concentrating on. There are always Curlew to photograph but as I said they are very hard to get close to. I was surprised, but very pleased to see this Wheatear though. It was on the back harbour wall, obviously resting before it crossed the channel. There are lots of birds on migration at the moment and Wheaters seem to move around on migration alone. I have found that if you are quiet you can get reasonably close to them and get good photos. This probably my best ever Wheatear photograph.
Just for the record, I went to my hide at 7.30 this morning and the Kingfisher flew past in both directions but didn't perch.
