House Sparrows have bred well this year. I am not sure if any of their nests were in the garden but there are certainly quite a few baby birds and juveniles using the garden at the moment. These are in the company of adults and the rest of the flock which has been increased dramatically, good news. . The juveniles have been feeding on the new, unripe berries on the pyracantha.
Later on in the afternoon we had a visit from a young Robin. This was a nice surprise because I haven't seen a Robin in the garden for a while. This bird was, however, a bit different. so young that it hasn't even started it's first moult. By the onset of winter all baby robins will have completed their post juvenile moult and gained the red breast that we are all familiar with so it was nice to also see that Robins have bred somewhere locally.
The Gate Keeper Butterfly is an insect that we have in the garden from time to time at this time of the year. Yesterday, even though it was windy and a little bit dull, not ideal conditions, one was in the garden and I managed to photograph it for the blog.
So a good day in the garden with Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Blackbird, Starlings and a Jackdaw and the breeding Collared Doves all passing through in addition to the ones above. Away from the garden, I had just a short while in the hide at around 7.30 without seeing the KF and at 8 the Environment Agency workers arrived to continue with their dredging, upstream. Peace was shattered so I came home. Then in the evening as I passed by, I just had a quick peep to see if everything was in order and safe. One of the Kingfishers was near the hide and left as soon as it spotted me. At least I know that everything is still in order.
