This is the surviving Meadow Pipit chick from nest 1 now at 10 days old, there were  originally 5 but they were taken by a predator at 5 or 6 days old. This chick is now very active, alert and aware and I suspect that if interfered with again it will flee the nest. Therefore this is probably the last photo of this chick. I am glad that it has achieved this age and I expect it to fledge successfully. It is remarkable that it has progressed so well increasing it's size and weight at an incredible rate as well as growing feathers and opening it's eyes fully.

At my second nest is tucked away nicely in a grass tussock and very well camouflaged.  There are 4 chicks who are all doing well and flourishing.  The most interesting thing about them at this age is the profusion of down which gives them an almost comical appearance. The parents are very wary and will not visit the nest while you are  in their territory.  This is to prevent indication of the nest  to predators.  They will even make "dummy" feeding drops to other areas to try and fool you. However,  if sat in a hide and under cover and they are unaware of you, it is possible to watch them coming and going. Because of the position of the nests, tucked away, as they are, low down and in grass tussocks, it is almost impossible to get any kind of photo of the parents  at the nest site.

The male parent of these birds is an extremely pretty and well marked bird.  I sat under a "natural" hide made from bracken, gorse and grass to get a photo of him near to the nest. He sat close by amongst the bracken  and didn't appear to be doing much work leaving the delivery of food to the chicks to  his mate. The nest location is in a very picturesque area and on my next visit I will take a panoramic photo of the location.
