The other day I posted about Banded Demoiselle and included a photo of a female, an attractive green damselfly. At the time I had failed to get any good photos of the male. For some inexplicable reason they are a very "skittish" creature and as they are approached, invariably flutter off to a new safe perch. This is incredibly frustrating behaviour and I find it hard to believe that they have any cognitive recognition of danger from human beings. I suspect that they react to changes in light and escape as soon as they recognise any movement. I am sure there is room for a great deal of study in this direction. Anyway regardless of the science it certainly does make it hard to get a good photograph and I had to resort to laying in the long grass and wait for one to eventually settle nearby. So here is a male and I am going to re-post the female so you can compare the two.
There is another species of Demoiselle, the "Beautiful" – Calopteryx virgo and they are equally as attractive. They are found in different waterside habitat, this one was photographed on the banks of a large pond situated in woodland on the outskirts of Exeter.
