I have been intrigued by the use of Wilson for several species of North American birds. I discover that Wilson was a Scottish immigrant who developed a love of nature in the early 19th century and became the most influential ornithologist of his day. Wilson's Snipe is a bird I have seen before and I was very pleased to discover a "new for me" species on the beach last Sunday at John Lloyd Park. The Wilson's Plover - Charadrius wilsonia. Apparently a common species in the US, this bird breeds on both East and West coast. I found them to be a particularly featureless bird but not without their charm and a bird that looked very at home in this environment amongst the small groups of Semipalmated Plover.
