When you spend any amount of time here in Florida you become more and more aware of the state bird, the Mockingbird. As an Englishman, I have often wondered what niche the Mockingbird would would fill back home, and what bird is the  European equivalent. Well there isn't one.  One thing is for sure, they sing beautifully and you can hear their lovely song in varied locations and habitats, they appear to be very adaptable. For example, there is a pair that I see every time I walk past the local library . I am pretty sure they are nesting somewhere nearby and I have had a quick look around, it would be nice to find it.

Their song is very impressive. It carries on the wind and is a sound that I really adore. They are mimics, but because of my lack of knowledge about the songs of other species I am never sure what is true Mockingbird or mimicry. They are omnivorous and  eat insects and fruit, and I have seen them eating prey as large as Dragonflies.
