Most of Saturday was spent out on the ocean. After a very early start we boarded a 20 foot fishing boat belonging to friends of my nephew Geoff. It was moored on the New River, inland from Port Everglades. As we made our way up the River in the breaking light toward the Ocean, an Osprey drifted over us in almost darkness. After 30 minutes or so we pushed out through the inlet and as soon as we were clear of the Manatee safety area we opened her up, within minutes we were quite away off shore after traveling for 10 minutes at around 30 knots. We spent a great day fishing for Palagic species. Conditions were great for boating but apparently not so for fishing with the wrong combination of wind direction and tides, but eventually we caught a few nice Black Fin Tuna which fought like the torpedos they resemble and tasted like something sent from heaven! They were lightly seared in a reduced Balsamic Vinegar glaze and served on a bed of salad with my sister's homemade sweet and sour vinaigrette dressing…………… sounds special doesn't it? It was!!!!!!!!!!
I tried to photograph the terns and gulls out at see, it was nigh impossible on the small boat in spite of the stability of the craft. The camera hated it and almost complained every time I tried but I did capture a few nice shots as well as a pretty decent Amberjack.
Anyway, here is a photo of a Laughing Gull that was following the boat picking at the "chum" trail we were laying out.
I have posted photos of Royal Tern already on this trip but I'm sure you will excuse me if I post another from yesterdays ocean adventure. I was hoping to se some other terns, to be specific Forsters but unfortunately that didn't happen. A dark brown bird, about the size of a small heron flew past us on two occasions. I didn't manage a decent photo but by size and shape I guessed it to be an American Bittern, quite what it was doing out at see was a mystery to us all.
