The Northern Parula Warbler - Parula americana is a small colourful passerine that I saw for the first time today. In spite of numerous visits to Florida over the last 20 years I had never seen one until this morning and then this afternoon, another pair in a different location. I can only assume that there are a few more around this year or perhaps the unusually cold Florida winter has had a dramatic effect on bird behaviour and bird movements. The bird above is a male and I found it be an extremely attractive species. They were very active and hard to photograph because they never stayed still long enough to focus on. Then when they moved, foliage seemed to get in the way making it even harder to get a good shot. The golden patch or "saddle" on the back is a really nice feature and compliments the golden yellow on the breast.
Another warbler species that I was very pleased to see again today was a Yellow Throated Warble - Dendroica dominica, closely related to the Parula. It is slightly larger and stunningly attractive.
As I sat taking pictures of these two lovely warbler species another favorite of mine showed it's self, the Prairie Warbler. They are canary yellow with very bold black markings. I find them very pretty as well. All in all, it's been quite a day for warblers, with lots of time left I am hoping to see some more interesting and attractive species.
