This little beauty was in my garden today and is an addition to my garden Hoverfly species list. I also saw Syrphus vitripennis today, another new species. I have probably seen Syrphus vitripennis before but today I managed a good look and got a photo or two. This makes a total of 21 hoverflies in my garden since I started to record them in November 2007. I have recently bought “British Hoverflies” by Stubbs and Falk, the bible of UK hoverflies. It is a great, complete guide to this fascinating group of insects that I find so interesting and attractive. Just going back to Myathropa florea. At first glance it appeared to be one of the Drone Fly species, (Esistalis sp.) but is much more richly marked and attractive and was not hard to ID with the Stubbs and Falk. I can thoroughly recommend this book.
