Another trip to find the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker this morning drew another blank but I was almost successful. I waited for an hour in the spot where it had been seen yesterday and had good views of Greater Spotted pairing behaviour which was really interesting. They were chasing around between the trees and putting on quite a show. I also watched a pair of Marsh Tits and almost got a good shot!. Half way through my wait for the Lesser Spotted I spoke to a couple who told me that they had seen it about 300 yards down river and they had kindly marked the spot by crossing some straws on the track and drawing in the mud. I hastily made my way there and stood for an age trying to see it but unfortunately they didn't show for me. There was an obvious nest hole and I have enclosed a photo but am not going to divulge the location for obvious reasons.

Of course without seeing the birds at the hole I have no way of knowing who it belongs to but I think it would suggest Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Oh,……. and here is a rubbish photo of the Greater Spotted Woodpecker male, when I first caught sight of this bird it had my pulse racing as I thought momentarily that it was going to be what I am looking for. Still there is always tomorrow!!!!
