Siskin (2)

At last we had another visit from a Siskin today, the third time this December. In fact we had two for just a few seconds and then this bird settled and fed. This was in spite of aggressive behaviour from the Goldfinches who were trying to keep the Sunflower hearts to themselves. There was a degree of aggression in reverse from the Siskin and he eventually won through and ousted the Goldfinches. There has been so much activity today, a constant stream of birds, Goldfinch numbers continue to increase and we have had the first Greenfinch for quite a while. Greenfinch numbers are down this year due to a viral disease which has had an impact on their numbers in some areas.

Siskin Picture
This picture is not as sharp as I would like but it is a good shot of the Siskin and shows the shape and markings really well. Let me reinforce the fact that our garden is a tiny, tiny little patch in the midst of concrete, tarmac and houses and it is even amazing to me how many birds of different species we have had here the last month.

Blackcaps of both sexes have been with us in the garden today and the hen currently in residence has been seen several times. I captured a shot of her feeding from the path on the fallen Sunflower. She hasn’t touched the apple which makes me certain that she is a different specimen than before.

Blackcap Hen Tuesday
Checking through my photos later in the evening I discovered this really nice photo of a Goldfinch which I just had to post.
