I have been working out a plan over the last few days to get better photographs of the Osprey at Powderham. I ought to say that there have been 2 Osprey here, one for at least a week but probably a little bit longer, and two for the last 4 days to my own knowledge. It is an exciting spectacle to see them particularly here in Devon and one of the better sightings in birdwatching. These birds are on migration on their way to West Africa and probably are unsuccessful breeders this year hence the early start to their migration. They are on a stop-over to feed before they continue in a few more days or so. A look around the various web-sites reports Ospreys at several Southern locations at the moment. It is impossible to say which population they belong to because there are breeding pairs in Scotland, the Lake District and Rutland Water in the East Midlands. This mystery adds to the magic of a sighting like this. Without giving too much away because I want to keep my plan a secret until it succeeds but it has allowed me to improve on the photos from other days. Today I caught sight of them twice, one has a primary feather missing so it will be easy to identify it. The second time I watched as one flew over the park and a photo, very distant, shows a fish in the birds talons. The crows and rooks have suddenly decided that they dont much like having very large birds off prey amongst them and have been mobbing them at every opportunity. In this photo today you can see just how much bigger they are than these rooks in the same shot.
