Out at the Kingfisher Ponds this morning I took some video between waiting for the Kingfisher to appear. I have to be honest and say that I was not paying too much attention to the species of Damselfly expecting them to be the ones seen already this year. When I returned home and had a look at the footage I became immediately aware that I had in fact filmed a White Legged Damsel. Note the difference in the markings on the long body as well as the thorax, these are diagnostic of this species, and of course the white legs, a bit of a give away given the nane! It is a first for this species for me, not particularly rare but I havn’t been studying them with any seriousness until haf way through last year. This Azure gave me a chance to observe feeeding behaviour. It really is a “food chain” thing going on out there in the wild and I for one find it absolutely fascinating. Damselfies look so pretty but they are voracious predators. I assume it caught this small gnat on the wing and then settled to eat it alive!
