Today has been more of an insect day rather than birds. I made the comment earlier that the natural environment is very accommodating, when the birds become more difficult to see and photograph then insects come into there own and start to show themselves. It was quite dull earlier on this morning so much so that I had hardly seen any insect activity at all. Then the sun shone and as if by command, suddenly the air was full of fluttering wings and exciting subjects to look at and study.
Two species of Damselflies, the Beautiful and Banded Demoiselle are gorgeous insects. They are coppery brown and turquoise. Males and females differ in colouration, and as interested as I am in birdlife, these insects are equally as lovely and easier to photograph once you have spotted one. Surprisingly those that I saw today were by ponds in some cases, but well away from water in others. Just have a look at how absolutely exquisite they are. The first one is a female Beautiful Demoiselle followed by a male. When I saw him today in a low willow tree, I just marvelled at how smart he was. Finally, a male Banded Demoiselle. I saw several of these today and they were quite a way from the nearby River. There are two posts today to read about birds and see butterfly photographs click here please!
