I have often said that the more you look the more you see and yesterday proved just that. I wandered along the path at the back of Exminster Marsh on the look out for Whitethroats and other warblers. Orange Tip butterflies were showing really nicely and I took a few good photos of them. My eye was drawn to what I thought was a Kestrel but it didn’t seem to fit, flying very quickly and swooping as though being blown by very strong winds. I watched it for a minute or so and followed it to a perch on a gate post 100 yards or more inside the marsh. As it was now settled I trained my lens on it and noticed that there were in fact 4 in total. It then became obvious that they were not Kestrel but Hobby, a species that I have only once seen before and that was in Florida! I took photo’s in flight and at rest. I have posted the best here which is cropped to get a good look, the best I can do unfortunately. But at least the photo shows the bird in context and in the habitat that you are likely to see them. They are migratory birds and just arrive here in the UK. The in flight shots, when I studied them showed one bird with prey in it’s talons, probably a swallow as I can see a hint of rusty colour but it is so pixelated and blurred that I can’t be sure of anything.
