Breaking news! Just sighted a Speckled Wood Butterfly in the garden a first for this attractive but not rare species. I didn’t manage a photo on this occasion but I have posted one taken in April last year by the Tow path of the Exeter Ship Canal near by. Bees are working in the garden both honey and small bumble bees. Look how laden with pollen the White Tailed Bumble Bee is. I took this photo of an Oil BeetleMeloe proscarabaeu yesterday whilst out on Budleigh Cliffs see this post and check the link also to a page about this species of beetle that has a very interesting life cycle which includes bumble bees. Also while we are talking of my garden the Blackbird nest that contained eggs last time I checked is now empty so I can only presume that the local Magpie has predated them!
