The problem with this time of year, if there is a problem there is so much to do and see outside that I am finding it hard to report it on my Blog, there just isn’t enough hours in the day to do it all. So, I am going to combine a few days into one and give you an insight into the last 3 great days here in Devon. The South Hams of South Devon are beautiful. Bigbury-on-Sea and Burgh Island is one of the most beautiful places in England and the birds are there to match. On Wednesday we did a coastal walk and spotted 38 species, some of them really notable. As we walked accross the fields towards the cliffs I mentioned to Burgh_island_2
Jenny that we would probably see Wheatear and I had no sooner got the words out than one flew away and landed on a low stone wall. Skylarks were singing and with a bit of belly crawling I got some shots. Really hard Skylark
to get very close but still worth posting. Next was a Wren singing in a small plantation.Wren
The Linnet is a bird that I don’t see often so I was pleased to seea pair along side a valley field Linnit
I excitedly took photos of a hovering Kestrel and as I did a Stonechat popped up Kestrel_5
right infront of me and gave me the chance for some glorious shots. Eventually he was joined by his mate and they flew away accross the valleyFor_a
Jackdaws were very numerous and showing well, but there was almost the same amount of Stonechats. The final really nice sighting was this Meadow Pippit, in fact there was a pair
Pippit_for_archos
which seems to be the way this time of year, everything comes in a matching pair! In the cafe back in Bigbury I noted lots of activity on a flowering shrub, the photos taken turned out to be a Mining bee Andrena sp. Black_bumble_bee_a
Mining_bee and the Hairy Footed Flower Bee –Anthophora plumipes. So all in all a really great day on all counts.
Thursday and today have been great as I managed photos of both Sedge and Cetti’s Warbler. I will tell all about that tomorrow with photo to match!
